Grasping at straws...

Have you ever felt like your life is a nightmare that you can't wake up from. It has to feel terrible from my wife's point of view. Right now she can only go in public for a short time so it is almost like we are prisoners in our own home. The voices, delusions, paranoia, and anxiety seem to be getting worse.  I am hoping that we will be trying another med that will work for a while. The longest period that we have had a med that worked at all is 10 months. We only have 2 more atypical antipsychotics left to try and her doctor does not want to either med. State hospital has been mentioned a lot lately, I am hoping that we can avoid that option. The other thing that has been mentioned is ECT, and I am wondering if anyone has had good success or not with the newer ECT.

  1. I did not have success with ECT. I had it last year and it was very traumatizing for myself. I am diagnosed as schizoaffective and I had also exhausted the antidepressants and antipsychotics available to me. The state hospital was being mentioned at every appointment. So while I was doing Intensive Outpatient Therapy, they suggested/forced ECT upon me. I was scheduled for 3 treatments a week over course of 6 weeks. Each time I was sedated, I woke up choking and screaming and had usually wet myself. My cognitive abilities, as well as my memory began to decline. My doctor assured me that this was all temporary, but I still have effects from it. As far as helping my depression/schizoaffective, it actually got worse. After finishing treatment in February 2012, I was hospitalized 3 times by April and again in October.

Now, that is only my experience. Some people swear that ECT has worked wonders for them. I am not one of those people. I finally found a combination of 2 antidepressants and a very high dose of the antipsychotic, Latuda with a back up of thiothixene that worked for me. Matter of fact, I haven't been on any antidepressants or antipsychotics since March. It gets tough sometimes, but I'm still able to manage so far.

Do your research and I wish you and your wife the best of luck.
